Midcentury modern design in 10 essential pieces | Entertainment News

  • September 16, 2023

Decade after decade, midcentury modern design continues to appeal. The New York Times noted a resurgence of the style in 1998. Nearly two decades later, there came another wave. Fast Company deemed it the “pumpkin spice latte of interior design.” It’s a style “Mad Men” popularized in the current century; its designers—Ludwig Mies van der Rohe, Charles and Ray Eames, Arne Jacobsen, and more—are named in reverent whispers among design circles.

Even casual design fans have likely heard the phrase “midcentury modern design” before. It is an influential design movement that became popular in the United States in the mid-20th century. Heavily influenced by German Bauhaus design, the midcentury modern aesthetic favors clean, simple craftsmanship using a blend of natural and human-made materials.

Although the style’s heyday is roughly placed from 1933 to 1965, it truly took off post-World War II, an era soaked in optimism, first with the Allied victory and then eventually as the U.S. set its sights on space. Because of the war, the U.S. became a production powerhouse, and output from mining, construction, and manufacturing doubled between 1939 and 1944. As soldiers returned home to rebuild their lives, the need for housing and furnishing increased, fueling designers (many of whom were émigré) to turn to the latest technologies developed during the war and to the global influences for inspiration.

Interestingly, midcentury modern wasn’t born until 1984, when author Cara Greenberg coined it for her book “Mid-century Modern: Furniture of the 1950s.” Since then, midcentury modern has become not just a style, argues Fast Company, but a “byword for ‘design’ itself,” or perhaps just taste.

So, which furniture pieces are essential to the era? Singulart used historical information and context from museums, experienced furniture resellers, and designers to compile a list of

22 Modern Log Cabin Ideas for a Chic Outdoorsy Interior

  • August 27, 2023

Log cabins are quintessentially rustic, which makes for a great backdrop to contrast with modern touches. However, you don’t need to complete a huge renovation to make a log cabin feel current with the times. If you want to give yours an updated look or simply want to channel their cozy energy in your non log cabin home, these modern log cabin ideas show how small changes can make a big difference.

Take a Minimalist Approach

<p><a href="" data-component="link" data-source="inlineLink" data-type="externalLink" data-ordinal="1">@this.old.river.cabin</a> / Instagram</p>

A cluttered log cabin can feel dated. To combat this, keep things simple in terms of the amount of decor you display, but also in the types of shapes you choose. For example, a simple floating shelf will look more modern and sleek than a shelf with ornate support brackets.

Choose Bright, Transitional Furniture

<p>Design by <a href="" data-component="link" data-source="inlineLink" data-type="externalLink" data-ordinal="1">@berschback_design</a> / Photo by <a href="" data-component="link" data-source="inlineLink" data-type="externalLink" data-ordinal="2">@alyssarosenheck</a> / Instagram</p>

Updating your log cabin can be as simple as switching out your furniture. However, you don’t need to stick with solely modern furniture to achieve a modern look. For example, transitional skirted sofas with subtle curves can look modern in a rustic environment, but the key is to select a neutral color for the upholstery, such as white, gray, or black.

Incorporate Modern Sconces

<p>Design by <a href="" data-component="link" data-source="inlineLink" data-type="externalLink" data-ordinal="1">@brantmcfarlaindesign</a> / Styled by <a href="" data-component="link" data-source="inlineLink" data-type="externalLink" data-ordinal="2">@jennyoconnorstudio</a> / Photo by <a href="" data-component="link" data-source="inlineLink" data-type="externalLink" data-ordinal="3">@nathanschroderphoto</a> / Instagram</p>

Sconce lighting can lean traditional or modern, depending on its shape. You can add a cozy but industrial look to your cabin with sconces with long arms and exposed bulbs. Sconces make an especially cozy addition to a breakfast nook.

Statement-Making Furniture

Furniture can be a piece of modern art in itself, and this geometric coffee table is the perfect example. It breaks up the organic textures and shapes typically present in log cabins. We suggest finishing the look off by hanging large-scale modern art nearby.

Create a Blank Slate With White

A dose of white paint in a log cabin can create an up-to-date and

Ariana Grande’s mid-century modern kitchen is surprisingly perfect for relaxation

Ariana grande in gray at the grammy awards

In her announcement for the upcoming Wicked film with Johnathan Bailey and Cynthia Erivo, Ariana Grande gave us a sneak peek into her gray and cream kitchen. In recent months, fans have taken note of the ‘Positions’ singer’s muted color palette. From a series of black and white photos on her Instagram to her all-gray ensemble at Wimbledon, Ari has been celebrating decorating with neutral tones.

The Instagram photo below shows the former Nickelodeon actress overwhelmed with excitement. Her post is captioned with gratitude to her co-stars, but we couldn’t stop staring at the background.

Ariana Grande, who has lived between New York and Los Angeles, has a mid-century modern kitchen complete with rounded furniture, a chic retro pendant lamp, and tall windows to fill the room with natural light. Tall, leafy plants add texture to the space. An industrial bar cart and glossy table contrast nicely with the natural elements of the room, especially the green outdoors streaming through the home’s generous windows. The brightness offsets the darkness of the hardware in the room, giving the crisp room a warmer feel.

‘With their classic looks, simple shapes, and pared-back style, mid-century modern decor ideas are enduringly popular – and it is easy to see why this look is revered so highly, even now,’ says Jennifer Ebert, deputy editor of Homes & Gardens. ‘Although mid-century modern décor was driven by advances in technology, it was also inspired by the natural world, and wood is the most widely used material for furniture – a popular interior design trend today.’

Ariana’s kitchen perfectly fits the bill. The style of Ariana’s room is deeply minimalist, with only a few pieces of neutral furniture visible. It also closely follows the mid-century modern tenet of mixing

Light-filled Coastal Modern makes the most of its available floorspace

  • March 28, 2023

Though it only has a length of 24 ft (7.3 m), the Coastal Modern mitigates its diminutive size with a flexible and light-filled interior. The tiny house features multiple storage areas and folding furniture, including a living room that doubles as a guest sleeping area.

The Coastal Modern is designed by Modern Tiny Living and based on a double-axle trailer. It’s clad in cedar, with a steel roof, while the interior is finished in vinyl flooring, with poplar tongue & groove walls.

Visitors to the home enter through glass double doors into the living room. This is dominated by a U-shaped seating area that has lots of integrated storage and can be converted into a double bed for sleeping guests.

Near the living room is the kitchen. This is on the simpler side for a North American tiny house – there isn’t an oven, for example – but since the home will be used as a guest house it doesn’t need a fully equipped kitchen. It has a farmhouse-style sink, fridge/freezer, and some stowable appliances. There’s also a handy table that doubles as a workspace and dining table and can also be easily folded away if some additional floorspace is needed.

The bathroom is next to the kitchen. Instead of a sliding door, it’s accessed by a sliding bookcase, adding a little additional storage space. Inside, the bathroom has a shower, sink, and an incinerating toilet, which as its name suggests, involves burning waste to dispose of it.

Where’s Marty? Checking out modern American art at the BMA

  • October 1, 2022

Hi everyone!

It will come as no surprise to you long-time viewers, but may come as a surprise to some of you new friends how much like the Baltimore Museum of Art.  It is world-class. It has pieces, both modern and “Old School,” that are historic.

I could go on, but do some research at the “University of Google” about The Cone Collection just for starters. Or just go to the BMA website  for a ton of information.

Where’s Marty? Getting a sneak peek of modern American art at the BMA

It is laid back, not stuffy and for the most part FREE. (A major exhibition could require a fee…like if all the Picasso’s on tour come by.) Also, it is open late on Thursday nights. There is something for everyone – I promise that.

Today we went to see and speak with the curators of American Modern Art 1900-1950. A smaller but specific collection that includes art, furniture, sculpture and more. We were told how one of the three top works of American art in-house, the Georgia O’Keeffe painting “Tulips,” plays into the jewelry next to it, and the deco grate cover from the legendary Hutzlers Department store that used to be on Howard Street downtown.

Where’s Marty? Exploring some of the greatest works of modern American art at the BMA

It was a chilled-out way for K2 and I to start the day. And never a bad way to spend a day either. Yep, I am a fan, and after a visit you will be too. And with the holidays not that far away, a visit to the museum store isn’t a bad idea either.

It might even make you feel uneasy because you don’t want to spend a lot of money only to discover that it wasn’t the look you really wanted. Following a few key shopping tactics will help you make better decisions before starting your journey toward creating a modern home design.

If you have a modern aesthetic in mind, choose pieces that are sleek and simple, without too many details. If you prefer a more traditional look, go with pieces that are ornamented but not flashy.

Here are some tips for picking the best modern furniture for your home.

  1. Consider your home’s style first. Modern furniture is sleek and minimalist, so it will look great in homes with contemporary or minimalist interiors. If your home has a more traditional or eclectic style, then modern furniture may not be the best fit.
  2. Consider the size and shape of the pieces you’re buying. Modern furniture is often geometric and angular, so make sure that the pieces you choose will fit in with the rest of your décor.
  3. Modern furniture is designed to be simple, sleek, and clean. Such pieces will most likely work best if you’re looking for furniture that can withstand everyday wear and tear.
