10 mid-century modern ideas to convince you this style is always on trend

  • July 26, 2023

mid-century modern decor ideas

If there’s one style that’s an absolutely constant in interior design trends it’s Mid-century Modern. Sure, it might take on a slightly different look from season to season, sometimes it’s more true to its 1940s roots and has a reel retro feel, sometimes it’s more in line with the minimalist Scandi aesthetic. But our love of tapered legs, low-slung silhouettes and the sleek, less-is-more approach is going nowhere.

The staying power of this style says a lot about how adaptable it is. It’s been on trend for over 80 years, with resurges coming every decade or so, and we see it used over and over again by designers the world over. So to pay homage to this ever-in-favor style, we’ve asked designers to talk us through their favorite mid-century modern spaces, and how you can bring the look into your home, whether you want to commit to the whole look or just add a touch of mid-century.

What is mid-century modern style?

‘Mid Century modern references the type of furniture and design that was being produced in, you guessed it, the middle of the last century,’ explains designer Bethany Adams. ‘There was an air of utilitarianism, simple forms and new ways of using materials. We automatically think of the 1950s, but actually, the mid-century period stretches from the 1930s to the 1970s.’

In terms of shapes and styles, it was all about form and function. Bold color was about, and key to the style, but there was just as much of a focus on the structures and sculptural shapes of mid-century spaces. There isn’t much in terms of fuss with this style, think clean lines, almost utilitarian. And the focus was very much on materials, lots of solid wooden pieces – particularly teak. Metal, glass,

An Elegant Victorian Home Gets A Dose Of Global Style

  • September 26, 2022

There are some real-estate unicorns still to be found in Riverdale, one of Toronto’s oldest downtown neighborhoods. A period Victorian house with its original architecture still intact would be one of them. For Erin Young and her husband, Jason Farrell, finding their unicorn proved to be elusive. They toured 20-plus listings over seven years, and made two failed offers. “We didn’t want to buy someone else’s renovation,” says Erin, an e-commerce and marketing executive. “We were determined to find an unspoiled house that we could renovate and make our own.”

So the couple could hardly hide their excitement when, in the fall of 2018, they finally found an elegant, three-storey, five-bedroom Victorian in the heart of Riverdale that had been in the same family for more than 50 years. Erin was so eager that she included a photo of their family with their offer to help her win the house. Sure, it had an outdated galley kitchen that was too small for a fridge, and the interior layout was a closed-off series of formal rooms not spacious enough for their family of five. But the house had good bones, a large backyard and still retained many of the original period features they were hoping for — think coved nine-foot ceilings, ornate plasterwork, stained glass windows and a grand foyer with its original staircase. Designer Samantha Sacks, who had worked on the renovation of the family’s previous house and was hired to reimagine this one.

Scroll down to see how she put a fresh spin on this Victorian home!

Belmont residents gets feel for new home before renovating it

  • July 14, 2022

Many people who buy a home that hasn’t been updated since the 1950s would want to do a major renovation before moving in. However, Belmont residents Rita and Sarkis Chekijian did the reverse. They purchased a home and decided to live in it first with their three children before making any decisions about the renovation.

After selling their Watertown home, they moved in with Sarkis’s parents on Woodfall Road in Belmont while looking for a place to live. What was supposed to be a few months turned into 18 months before they learned about a home just a few doors down the street.

The owner had died and the Chekijians were able to purchase 56 Woodfall Road in 2014 for $850,000 through a private sale. It’s a ranch-style home built in 1956 with four bedrooms, a two-car garage, living room, dining room, kitchen and three full bathrooms.

Work continues on the addition Sarkis and Rita Chekijian are having put on their Belmont home, July 8, 2022.

Now, eight years later and a little longer than they originally planned, they have temporarily moved out of their home while it is partially gutted for updated electrical wiring, a major renovation of the kitchen and bathrooms and the addition of a new half bathroom, family room, four-season sun room, exercise room, storage closets and a farmer’s porch.

Russell Amaral, of Dream Builders, cuts planks for the new front porch at 56 Woodfall Road in Belmont, July 8, 2022.

Why they waited

It was not their dream house, but the Chekijians said they loved the neighborhood and location down the street from Sarkis’s parents, who bought their home in 1989.

They knew they wanted to make changes to the house, but felt it was important to get a feel for the space first.

From ‘frat house’ to family home: A major remodel in Bethesda

  • July 13, 2022

Comment

When a rainbow-painted gladiator statue is the housewarming gift from a builder to the homeowners, you know there must be a great story behind it.

“My grandmother’s cousin sculpted this concrete gladiator statue that had a lamp on top and eventually it ended up in my parents’ garage,” says John Frye, 43, who is in commercial air-conditioning sales. “My friend Matt loved it and brought it to our frat house when we went to college together in Cleveland. He spray-painted it silver and then … it sat in his parents’ basement for 20 years.”

Frye’s friend Matt Covell, also 43, founded Structure, a custom home builder and renovation firm based in North Bethesda, Md., in 2016. He remodeled Frye’s house in 2019-2020 and brought the gladiator to Matt Corrado, an artist and mutual high school friend, to “paint it rainbow colors as a housewarming gift,” Covell says.

“We placed it in a niche near the main-level powder room for a photo shoot just for fun, and it looks like they’ll keep it there,” Covell said.

A Chevy Chase, Md., family rebuilds after a devastating fire

Family and friends are central to John and Bridget Frye’s North Bethesda home, which was renovated and expanded in 2020. The home, a 1950s-era red brick rambler with a basement, was owned by John’s sister, who lived in it with friends for several years. Once she moved out, John rented it for a few years and eventually bought it from his sister in 2004.

Matt Covell, John and Bridget were part of the crowd that hung out at the house after college, which served as the gathering place in the early 2000s for a wide-ranging group of friends from Our Lady of Good Counsel High School, then located in
