Why buy new? Flipped furniture saves money, environment

  • September 26, 2023

Lisa Arnold is a transformer.

The Richland resident takes pieces of furniture that are outdated and brings them back to life.

“I am passionate about this,” said Arnold, owner of Fabulously Flipped. “I put my heart and soul into every piece to make it look beautiful again.”

She began by refurbishing some of her own furniture in 2018 and selling it at a local upcycle shop in Richland called Modern Yesterdays.

By the summer of 2022, Arnold began searching for additional pieces to flip. Her business began to grow to — she started refurbishing bathroom vanities, kitchen cabinets and bedroom sets. She has recycled buffets, coffee tables, nightstands, desks and even old record players.

“A person might have a family heirloom they want to preserve, something special to them, and it just might need updated,” Arnold said. “They want to keep it, but feel like it needs a new color because they are changing the décor of their home. I can help them.”

One of the benefits is that clients don’t have to invest in purchasing new, she said.

According to Architectural Digest, a GlobalData survey said 54% of shoppers feel that buying secondhand furniture pieces is better for the environment.

Additionally, refurbished furniture adds a character that one isn’t going to find at budget or mass-produced furniture stores.

The cost of her service varies based on size, intricacy and technique — the paint and finishing process. Pricing for a six-drawer dresser starts at $200.

She typically works on quality wood pieces.

“I can save you money,” Arnold said. “A lot of times people get new countertops and floors and backsplashes for their kitchens. I can redo the cabinets for a fraction of the cost (of new ones).”

Inside a $100k renovated French-inspired home at Pinnacle @ Duxton, Lifestyle News

  • April 21, 2023

In this week’s Insider Tour, we visit a 1,001 square feet apartment in the Pinnacle @ Duxton, one of the most unique (and famous) public housing development in Singapore.

The apartment was purchased for $925,000 and underwent a $100,000 renovation to achieve a modern French aesthetic that pays homage to the heritage black and white houses of Singapore.

The first thing that greets you as you enter the apartment is the fluted feature wall, which wraps around to concealed storage and the bomb shelter.

The entrance to the apartment also features breeze blocks, adding to the overall charm and character of the space. As for the living, the feature wall is covered in wainscoting and the perimeter of the ceiling is dressed up with black crown molding.

alt

The kitchen features a long counter and a vinyl herringbone floor, and the glass partitions were removed to create an open kitchen setup. The kitchen floor is covered by unique black and white motif tiles that go along with the classic pendant lights.

alt

Another detail is the french arched doors with fluted panels that lead to the service yard.

alt

The bathroom doors are quite a sight with French doors, and the bathroom has been done up with black tiles and matching black bathroom fittings that form a good contrast with the white basin.

The master bedroom features a king-sized bed and full-height cabinets with arched rattan detailing.

Home Renovations That Will Pay You Back

  • June 13, 2022

“If it’s more than 15 years old, upgrading the kitchen floor, cabinetry and appliances to modern standards will net you more money during [the] time of sale,” said Joe Polyak, founder and realtor of Rise Homes in the San Francisco Bay Area.

Many families view the kitchen as the center of the home. So, minor kitchen renovations can drastically increase your property’s value — the Remodeling report showed a 65 percent national recoup on average. This renovation can also increase home enjoyment for the entire family.

If you have an outdoor kitchen that needs to be renovated, consider updating the appliances. For example, Lowe’s offers savings on high-quality appliances.

“Outdoor entertaining and grilling go hand in hand,” said Jule Eller, director of trend and style at Lowe’s. “So bring the heat, and fire up that backyard flavor with a modular grill. You can choose add-ons like a sink, side burners or refrigerator to create a complete outdoor kitchen.”

Still, renovators should take care not to go overboard with kitchen remodel costs. “Upgrading the appliances to a certain level of luxury — KitchenAid versus Bosch, for example — can significantly increase value,” said Polyak. “Be careful, though. You don’t need to put Wolf appliances in a condo in a blue-collar condo complex. That won’t add value.”
