Susty a winner for WA design competition
An eco-friendly home has scooped the Design Matters National Building Design Award of the Year for Western Australia 2022, awarded at the Annual Awards cocktail party held at the floating bar, The Raft in Perth. And according to the judges sustainability was a clear trend among the winners.
Wing House by John Damant of Arcologic was described by judges as a timeless response to its surrounding environment. Nestled between the trees just out of Margeret River, the project took out the top award for the state and also won the categories of Best New House (WA) between $1 million – $2 million, and Best Residential Rural Design (WA).
Design Matters National (DMN) is a peak national professional body for more than 2500 building designers, architects, and industry professionals.
The judges described the house as: “a design that reflects its rural setting, the use of natural materials, opening to the aspect and use of dividing partitions to create privacy. A great technical outcome”.
Arcologic founder John Damant designed the home for clients who purchased a subdivision for their retirement. The clients wanted a spacious home to host visitors while still allowing for privacy.
Mr Damant accepted the award, stating: “Wing House was designed in two offset ‘wings’ separated by the entry and alfresco, each wing representing the zoning required for different uses within the home. The skillion roof also sweeps up to the north to maximise solar gain, which also gives the impression of a bird about to take flight, hence the moniker, Wing House”.
The home is designed to solar passive principles to minimise heating and cooling requirements. With north-facing orientation, a wood fireplace, ample natural light, built-in fans and openings for a southerly breeze, the home will remain warm in winter and cool in summer.
