Blending wooden furniture with modern elements is an art form that allows you to create a chic and captivating space so, by carefully selecting the right wooden pieces, contrasting materials, balancing colours and finishes and incorporating textures, you can achieve a harmonious blend. If you want to learn more about the art of mixing, we got you sorted with tips on how to create a harmonious and chic look by combining wooden furniture with modern elements –

  • Choosing the right wooden furniture:

In an interview with HT Lifestyle, Raghunandan Saraf, Founder and CEO at Saraf Furniture, highlighted, “The cornerstone of a successful mix lies in choosing the right wood furniture pieces. Look for furniture pieces that have timeless beauty and quality craftsmanship. Think of a beautifully crafted dining table, a vintage wooden cabinet or a rustic coffee table. These wood pieces will serve as anchors for your design scheme and set the tone for the overall look.”

“To achieve a harmonious blend, it’s important to contrast the warmth and texture of wood furniture with sleek, modern materials. Incorporate elements like glass, metal or acrylic into your decor. 22 Modern Log Cabin Ideas for a Chic Outdoorsy Interior

  • August 27, 2023

Log cabins are quintessentially rustic, which makes for a great backdrop to contrast with modern touches. However, you don’t need to complete a huge renovation to make a log cabin feel current with the times. If you want to give yours an updated look or simply want to channel their cozy energy in your non log cabin home, these modern log cabin ideas show how small changes can make a big difference.

Take a Minimalist Approach

<p><a href="https://www.instagram.com/p/CKePxLSFkqN/" data-component="link" data-source="inlineLink" data-type="externalLink" data-ordinal="1">@this.old.river.cabin</a> / Instagram</p>

A cluttered log cabin can feel dated. To combat this, keep things simple in terms of the amount of decor you display, but also in the types of shapes you choose. For example, a simple floating shelf will look more modern and sleek than a shelf with ornate support brackets.

Choose Bright, Transitional Furniture

<p>Design by <a href="https://www.instagram.com/p/Cu5VbqDuyAo/" data-component="link" data-source="inlineLink" data-type="externalLink" data-ordinal="1">@berschback_design</a> / Photo by <a href="https://www.instagram.com/alyssarosenheck/" data-component="link" data-source="inlineLink" data-type="externalLink" data-ordinal="2">@alyssarosenheck</a> / Instagram</p>

Updating your log cabin can be as simple as switching out your furniture. However, you don’t need to stick with solely modern furniture to achieve a modern look. For example, transitional skirted sofas with subtle curves can look modern in a rustic environment, but the key is to select a neutral color for the upholstery, such as white, gray, or black.

Incorporate Modern Sconces

<p>Design by <a href="https://www.instagram.com/brantmcfarlaindesign/" data-component="link" data-source="inlineLink" data-type="externalLink" data-ordinal="1">@brantmcfarlaindesign</a> / Styled by <a href="https://www.instagram.com/jennyoconnorstudio/" data-component="link" data-source="inlineLink" data-type="externalLink" data-ordinal="2">@jennyoconnorstudio</a> / Photo by <a href="https://www.instagram.com/nathanschroderphoto/" data-component="link" data-source="inlineLink" data-type="externalLink" data-ordinal="3">@nathanschroderphoto</a> / Instagram</p>

Sconce lighting can lean traditional or modern, depending on its shape. You can add a cozy but industrial look to your cabin with sconces with long arms and exposed bulbs. Sconces make an especially cozy addition to a breakfast nook.

Statement-Making Furniture

<p><a href="https://www.wrjdesign.com/" data-component="link" data-source="inlineLink" data-type="externalLink" data-ordinal="1">Design by WRJ Design Associates</a> / Photo by <a href="https://www.instagram.com/tuckf/" data-component="link" data-source="inlineLink" data-type="externalLink" data-ordinal="2">Tuck Fauntleroy</a> </p>

Furniture can be a piece of modern art in itself, and this geometric coffee table is the perfect example. It breaks up the organic textures and shapes typically present in log cabins. We suggest finishing the look off by hanging large-scale modern art nearby.

Create a Blank Slate With White

A dose of white paint in a log cabin can create an up-to-date and

Tired of your plain-looking flat-packs? Looking for ways to make your IKEA furniture look more expensive? Love hacking furniture but want an easy upgrade that doesn’t require complicated tools? If the answer is ‘yes’ to any of the above then furniture overlays could be the answer, and they’re quickly becoming the next big thing in DIY.

We all love the utility of IKEA’s flat-packs, and there’s no denying that their sleek, minimalist design makes them the perfect canvas for letting your creativity run wild with clever IKEA hacks, but sometimes we need a little helping hand to make them more decorative and unique. Well, that’s where IKEA overlays come in. These decorative panels come in a variety of sizes, shapes, and patterns, and they’re by far the easiest way to jazz up dressers, cabinets, and even mirrors with minimal effort.

‘IKEA overlays offer an affordable way to customize mass-produced furniture and make it uniquely yours,’ explains Lotta Lundaas, CEO and founder of Norse Interiors, a company that offers IKEA customization. ‘By adding overlays to existing IKEA furniture, you can also extend their lifespan and reduce waste by not replacing them entirely.’

Modern Icons in the Mother City: Inova Concept Store

  • August 21, 2023

WORDS Steve Smith PHOTOS Paris Brummer

With its beautifully restored heritage building and strikingly modern furniture and lighting on offer, the Inova Concept Store is well worth a visit.

With a storied provenance and a trending location, Inova Concept Store is the most recent addition to the Cape Town design scene. A glance through its large street-facing windows on the Mother’s City’s bustling Harrington Street reveals a space stocked with some of the world’s iconic furniture, lighting and accessories brands – we’re talking HAY, Moooi, Arflex, Audo Copenhagen, Arper, Magis, Pedrali, Miniforms and, coming soon, Memphis Milano. You’ll find some local products too – planters from local ceramics meisters Vorster & Braye, and bespoke mirrors by +27.

It’s a smart choice of location – there’s a lot going in Harrington Street these days, with new retail spaces opening up all the way up the road – and it was a smart choice to employ architect Robert Silke to refurb the frontage and interior of what was the kind of nondescript old heritage building that never registered on the eye. It’s thanks to Robert’s heritage sensibilities that the character of the building remains firm while being granted new life as a functioning space in 2023.

Inova Concept Store is the brainchild of Brent Weldon – and yes, that surname and orange semi-circle logo painted on the side of the building will likely jog the memory of some of VISI’s older furniture aficionados. You may recall a store called Innovation back in the 1980s/’90s that was initially in Loop Street, and then at The Foundry in Green Point. Started by Brent’s dad, Innovation was a pioneer in importing high-end, mostly Italian collectable furniture for a discerning clientele. In subsequent years, Brent focused more on supplying large commercial spaces with luxury furniture and

The rise and fall of furniture startup Poppin

  • August 18, 2023

All 71 employees at Poppin’s New York City office and showroom at 16 Madison Square West will be let go, according to a required notice filed with the state Department of Labor. Representatives from Poppin did not respond to requests for comment.

Poppin launched in 2012. By early 2013, co-founder and CEO Randy Nicolau told Forbes that the company’s products were resonating in both the consumer and corporate markets.

“The consumer market has already driven thousands of transactions for us in our first three months since launch,” he said, “and the corporate market has driven five to six figure orders.” In 2017, Crain’s named the company to its Fast 50 list and in 2019 to its Best Places to Work list.

Bright and shiny

It was a bubbly time for New York City consumer tech. Warby Parker and Gilt Groupe had paved the way for tech-enabled e-commerce businesses that built charismatic branding and direct-to-consumer sales that kept prices lower. The next generation, including Blue Apron, Boxed and Zola all launched around the same time as Poppin.

Rounds of financing followed. New York venture capital firms who put money behind Poppin included David Tisch’s Box Group, Christopher Burch’s Burch Creative Capital and First Round Capital. All told, the firm raised about $75 million in venture capital before its sale.

Poppin sells modern-looking office furniture, including sitting and standing desks, chairs and desktop organization like paper trays and pen holders. Colors veer away from white, gray and black and into hues like “millennial pink.”  The office market typically operates through a maze of dealers, so the fact that anyone—a startup, a 200-person firm, a freelancer—could order a $450 desk online was refreshing.

Post-pandemic slowdown

Though Poppin sold to both individual consumers and businesses, the Covid work-from-home era proved to be an obstacle,

25 Midcentury Modern Furniture Pieces That Will Always Be in Style

  • August 15, 2023

“Hearst Magazines and Yahoo may earn commission or revenue on some items through these links.”

If you’re in the market for retro-feeling yet timeless home design, perhaps no style is as enduring–or as worth the investment–as the best midcentury modern furniture. This period of design, which began post-World War II and continued into the 1960s, is identifiable by its soft-edges and functional style. At the time, craftspeople, architects, and furniture designers were looking for a way to create new and innovative pieces that leaned minimalistic, using materials like wood, vinyl, and glass to create organically-shaped furniture. Rather than the angular shapes and straight lines that were seen before, midcentury modern furniture embraced funky seating, rounder tables, and unusual shapes. This era of design has continued to be popular today in part because of its balance of utility and eye-catching details.

Whether you’re in the market for a new comfortable couch or an angular bookshelf to store your coffee table books, midcentury modern furniture may be the best choice for you. These days, many luxury furniture brands create pieces that replicate the style, with a fresh twist. If you’re committed to the genre, you can also find iconic designs from the time period that are still being made today, such as the Eames Lounge Chair. No matter which room in your home you’re designing, there is a midcentury modern piece that will fit perfectly.

Here, shop the 25 best midcentury modern furniture that will instantly elevate your home.

Hamsa serves modern Israeli cuisine in Rice Village

  • August 12, 2023
The number five is kind of a big deal at 5555 Morningside Drive, the address for modern-Israeli restaurant Hamsa—which, translated in Arabic, means five. Hamsa is also known as an ancient Islamic and Jewish symbol for the Fatima hand, which symbolizes protection, health and good fortune.

It’s no coincidence that co-founder and CEO Itai Ben Eli decided to open Hamsa in 2022 in the fifth month of the year. The opening came two years after Ben Eli originally leased the space, right before a global pandemic shut down businesses in 2020.

“It’s all a blessing. I believe that we opened at the right time,” Ben Eli said.

What’s special about it?

Step into the restaurant, and the ambiance, designed by Ben Eli’s wife, takes diners to an upscale European dining room with colorful interior and modern furniture.

Dining at Hamsa, Ben Eli said, means a variety of items on a jam-packed table where different flavors, textures and temperatures come together. Cocktails and wine options have a Middle Eastern twist if they’re not originally sourced from the region. He stressed it’s not only about what food is being served at Hamsa, but also how food is eaten: family style.

Why we love it

Ben Eli said the term “Israeli cuisine” is broad.

“Israel has so many different nationalities and types of cuisine in one melting pot,” he said.

Guests can expect food flavors and techniques inspired from the Middle East’s Levant region, which includes Lebanon, Syria, Turkey and Northern Africa. Ingredients used in many menu items include olive oil, chickpeas and many spices as well as Turkish, Greek and Eastern European influences.

“It’s really all across the Mediterranean,” Ben Eli said.

What’s on the menu

Items vary across dinner and lunch menus. For both lunch and dinner, diners can pick

New Jersey business owners buy midcentury furniture straight from homes in Denmark

  • August 11, 2023

The credenza in the back of the Mercedes-Benz Sprinter van groaned as Lars Balderskilde drove through the woodlands near Vejle, Denmark, a city on a fjord about 2 1/2 hours from Copenhagen.

It was late January, and after passing a lake filled with swans, Balderskilde stopped at a house where he picked up an old bar cabinet that he paid for in cash. Then came stops at other homes to collect nesting tables and a mirror. The sun had set by the time he met Nina Toft and Grethe Kock, two sisters, at the home of their mother, whose funeral they had hosted earlier that day.

“It’s always emotional, but you have to let go,” Toft said to Balderskilde, who had come to look at various pieces in the house.

Kock showed him a tiny clay bird that she had made as a girl. “I’ll give you a good deal,” she said, jokingly.

Balderskilde did not take the bird. But he did fill the van with a teak dresser and bookcase the sisters’ parents had owned since the 1950s, a desk, a blue PH 5 pendant lamp and a Le Klint 325 floor lamp, a model originally designed to decorate a residence of Nobel Prize-winning physicist Niels Bohr. He paid the sisters $1,800 for the items.

Toft and Kock had contacted Balderskilde through a website where he offers to buy furniture from people all over Denmark. While lugging the pieces out of the house, Balderskilde told Toft, “I have a boutique in New York.”

The store, Lanoba, is actually in Jersey City, New Jersey, and sells refurbished Danish modern furniture, a minimalist style originating in Denmark that was typically made with natural materials like wood, leather and Danish cord from the 1930s through the 1960s.

Balderskilde, who is Danish, and
