South Carolina is loaded with natural splendor. But did you know you can bask in nature’s beauty, but also view works of art, see exotic animals and learn local history all in one spot in the state?” data-ylk=”slk:Brookgreen Gardens;elm:context_link;itc:0″ class=”link “Brookgreen Gardens in Murrells Inlet has delighted and educated visitors for decades. And it recently earned a spot among a new ranking as one of the best botanical gardens in the U.S.

Brookgreen Gardens ranked seventh out of the 10 best botanical gardens in the nation for the 2023 USA Today Readers’ Choice Awards. According to USA Today, the awards “highlight the best of the best in contests covering categories such as destinations, food and drink, hotels, and things to do.”

Located north of Charleston and south of Myrtle Beach, Brookgreen Gardens was founded in 1931 by Archer and Anna Hyatt Huntington. The botanical garden sits on property that spans 9,127 acres that preserves the site’s natural and cultivated landscape.

Highlights of the botanical garden include 250-year-old oak trees that were planted in the early 1700s when the site was four rice plantations. Nearby is a butterfly garden and a sculpture garden, along with a Palmetto garden.

But Brookgreen Gardens has even more than a vast a array of plants and flowers. The site also holds the Lowcountry Zoo, which has been a major part of Brookgreen since its inception.

Animals at the zoo include alligators, bald eagles, grey foxes, owls, river otters, ducks and more. The zoo offers visitors a chance to interact with some of the animals, along with daily tours with an interpreter who provides information about the creatures.

For those more interested in local history, Brookgreen has something to offer in that regard as well.

George Home Gingham Seersucker Reversible Duvet Set

George Home Gingham Seersucker Reversible Duvet Set

After all the TikTok buzz of George Home’s Modern Cottage homewares launch, I got the opportunity to get up close and personal with the George Home new homeware Springtime collection at a recent preview – and let me tell you it did not disappoint.

As a long-term fan of George Home already, I was prepared for good things but what I saw seriously impressed me. Chiming with key home decor trends;elm:context_link;itc:0″ class=”link “home decor trends and with just the right amount of quirk, this new collection really grabbed my attention.

There are gorgeous lilac hues, contemporary gingham checks, scallop and ruffles edges, not to mention stunning throws in fun motifs. I even snapped up one of their cool tiger throws straight off the back of this launch as it was too good a bargain to miss at only £22.

Of course, you could make your own ruffle cushion but if you’re keen for an instant uplift, here’s my round-up of the pieces I think will get snapped up tout suit. Don’t let these hang around in your basket for too long. I missed out on some lilac highball glasses and I’m still trying to recover from it.

My star buy – The pink tiger throw, £22

Greg Lusk, Director of Gardens/Horticulturist at the Amarillo Botanical Gardens, stated that this annual event was originally inspired by the tea party held by the Mad Hatter character in the well known “Alice in Wonderland” tale. Lusk said that the event has grown over the years and became well known for individuals wanting to dress up representing the theme and having a good time.

“When we first started this, very few dressed up, but now probably 80 percent of the people come dressed with the theme or even more,” Lusk said. “You don’t need to dress up to have fun at this party, but it is fun

Meet The Makers | Mar 23, 2023

By Caroline Biggs

Don’t let his traditional upbringing fool you—LaVern Hershberger has an eye for modern design. Though he’s been crafting heirloom-quality furnishings for his family’s furniture brands, Homestead Furniture and Abner Henry, since teenhood, his present-day pieces for the latter—a contemporary offshoot of the former—are brimming with contemporary appeal. “Fulfilling the brand’s mission to ‘serve with excellence’ requires innovation,” he tells Business of Home. “We constantly have to push the envelope.”

LaVern Hershberger Zach Pontz

Growing up near the tiny rural town of Fredericksburg, Ohio, Hershberger was immersed in his family’s Craftsman-style furniture-making business. At 14, he began working at the company’s on-site manufacturing facility, where he learned how to do everything from cut lumber to hand-mix dyes and glazes. “I worked in every department at the factory and spent several years in the color development lab, before eventually being named president of the company [in 2022],” he says. When he started, the brand only offered six finishes; it now supplies more than 3,000 options, many of which were designed in collaboration with interior designers to meet the market’s ever-evolving needs.

Today, the brand offers an array of exquisite hand-made confections spanning four-poster hardwood beds, architectural brass-banded cocktail tables and black-silver-embossed consoles. Under Hershberger’s direction, the 100-year-old company has carved out a unique space in the industry, offering fully customizable furnishings that fuse centuries-old craft techniques—passed down from generations of Amish makers—with cutting-edge technology. “Our craftsmen have incredible talent in a wide range of areas—from technical skills to artisanal finish applications—which allows us to respond to each designer’s order and craft it to the level of quality our clients have come to expect,” he

Botanical Gardens announces re-opening of Butterfly House

 • March 29, 2023

The Dothan Area Botanical Gardens will soon re-open its “Wings of Wonder” seasonal butterfly house at the 47-acre garden. Beginning April 1, visitors can visit the 1800-square-foot screened structure to see and learn about native butterflies and their life cycle.

“To our knowledge, there are only two other large seasonal Butterfly Houses in Alabama, in Huntsville and Birmingham, so this is a unique opportunity for residents and visitors to the Wiregrass Region,” said William Holman, Gardens Director. “When you enter, you will be surrounded by approximately 500 native butterflies. Visitors with a sharp eye will be able to observe adult butterflies emerge from their chrysalis, lay eggs, or watch young caterpillars feed on their host plants,” he added.

The unique structure will be open “seasonally” from April 1 until Oct. 31 and will follow the season and natural life cycle when butterflies are most active in the Wiregrass Region.

Butterflies play an important role in pollination and scientist have determined that one out of every three bites of food is made possible thanks to the wind, water, and other pollinators like bees, bats, birds, beetles, and other small critters. They also help sustain our ecosystem and produce our natural resources by helping plants reproduce.

“Wings of Wonder” will be open from 10 a.m. until 4 p.m. Saturday through Tuesday and from 1 until 4 p.m. Wednesday through Friday. Admission is timed, with hourly tickets available at the garden entrance. “We are trying to reserve a few mornings a week for groups and area schools,” Holman said. “Groups and schools can submit a Field Trip Request Form to reserve a time and date on those mornings,” he added.

Admission to “Wings of Wonder” is $3 per person, in addition to the regular entrance fee

These 6 Home Items Are Not Worth the Splurge

 • March 29, 2023

David Quarles

There’s no way around it: decorating a home can be pricey. But, you don’t have to throw away big bucks on every item you buy. In fact, there are some home items you simply shouldn’t spend much on—even the experts think so.

Certain furnishings, including keep-them-forever pieces that put up with plenty of wear and tear, are worthy of a hefty price tag, while others simply aren’t. So what home items can you give your budget a break on?

We asked interior designers, David Quarles and Bethany Adams, which home items aren’t worth splurging on. Here’s their money-saving advice.

 • David Quarles is a Memphis-based interior designer, jewelry designer, and content creator.

 • Bethany Adams is a certified interior designer with the Kentucky Board of Architecture. She has over 15 years of design experience.

Planters and Vases

Plant parents, rejoice—Quarles is giving you permission to stop spending serious money on planters and vases.

“I love plants and how they bring literal life to each space designed,” Quarles says. “However, there’s no need to spend a ton to get the look of a well-housed plant baby.”

Instead, he recommends shopping stores like HomeGoods, Walmart, and online sources like AllModern, which allow you to buy affordable planters, pots, and vases, giving your collection of monsteras and pothos a well-curated and loved look that won’t break your budget.

“Plus, these stores have their finger on the pulse for the latest styles of home decor, so you’re still able to get the desired, on-trend look for much less and without sacrificing quality,” Quarles says.

Think you need to hit the gallery scene for awe-worthy art for your home? Think again, says Adams.

“While I believe in spending money on art that you really love, I tend to purchase vintage pieces

Cleveland Home and Remodeling Expo brings large crowds

 • March 29, 2023

CLEVELAND — The Cleveland Home and Remodeling Expo returns for another weekend.

Organizers expect between 10,000 to 12,000 people will attend.

For local businesses like Imperfect Perfect Furniture and Décor, they say it’s all about exposure at the Cleveland Home and Remodeling Expo.

“It is absolutely awesome. We have seen more people we can touch ourselves,” said Imperfect Perfect Furniture and Décor LLC., Owner Samantha Ryan.

Other vendors like Cardell Cabinetry want to help people’s home improvement dreams come true.

“That’s worth a lot of money to everyone is to give them the support they need,” said Cardell Cabinetry Vice President of Sales, Alan Boucher.

Because of the pandemic, supply chain issues and then rising costs, Alan Boucher says his business saw a decline in sales.

“The kitchen is the heart of the home and when we have visitors and we have holidays, everyone gathers in the kitchen, so for that time with everyone staying at home, we really slowed down,” said Boucher.

That’s why visitors like Chad Hudock tell News Five’s Remi Murrey they’re here at the expo.

“We’ve been through a lot the last few years, and I want to try and support them,” said Hudock.

The expo continues Sunday from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m
