These Leather Messenger Bags Are Perfect for Toting Your Essentials in Style

  • October 31, 2022

A messenger bag is one of the most versatile options when it comes to carrying your daily essentials and is a great choice for anyone who wants to branch out from toting around their trusty backpack. While some messenger bags can feel a bit too casual for an office or after-work event, there’s one material that immediately dresses up their aesthetic: leather.

Leather is as hard-wearing as it is good-looking and is a great choice for an item you plan to use almost every day. Commuting looks different for everybody, and some may need more storage than others, so we’ve gathered a variety of leather messengers to suit the needs of anyone looking to upgrade their go-to bag.

The Best Leather Messenger Bags

What to Consider

Type of Leather

Leather is something we’re all used to seeing in bags, shoes, and jackets, but the sourcing and processes that leather goes through greatly differs from type to type. “Full-grain” describes leather made from the entire top part of the hide and includes all the material’s natural texture and fibers, giving it a unique finish; it is the most durable and highest-grade leather available, though it comes at a higher cost than other types.

The most common material used by leather goods brands is top-grain leather: This is leather that’s been split off the top of the hide and sanded down, making it smoother but also a bit less durable. Top-grain leather is widely available and easier to work with for manufacturers, so products made from this type are more affordable.

All the bags listed are top-grain except for the ones where we’ve specified that full-grain leather has been used.

Kung Fu stunt coordinator and star on Nicky Shen’s fighting style and new character Bo

  • October 29, 2022

Kung Fu delivers high-octane action on a weekly basis.

At its core, Kung Fu is the story of Nicky Shen (Olivia Liang) as she comes back home to California to avenge her shifu and reunite with her family, which is the heart of Kung Fu’s winning combo of action and story. “We always start with a couple of meetings that get into the tone, feel, structure of the scene and the story we are trying to tell,” student coordinator Andrew Chin says of the process of designing fight scenes. From there, there are a lot of factors to take into account.

For one, Nicky isn’t a vigilante, so Liang focuses on the reason she’s fighting and the emotion behind it. “It has to be rooted in some kind of reason, and not fighting for the sake of fighting,” she explains.

The show’s different characters’ fighting styles not only come from where and how they trained, but also who they are. Nicky, for example, came back home from a Shaolin Temple, so her specific Kung Fu style is one Chin describes as “regal” and she always carries the principles taught at the temple with her. Comparing her to other characters, you can see how Henry’s (Eddie Liu) street smarts have translated to him having a mix of styles, and Zhilan’s (Yvonne Chapman) training as an assassin results in a more lethal approach even though it’s also Kung Fu. In terms of Nicky’s romance with Henry, that also impacts how she fights. “[Nicky] and Henry have been training together, so she absorbs as much of that as possible, but still keeps her Shaolin principles and fights honorably,” Chin says about how Nicky’s style has evolved.

Food influencer whips up delicious meal for double-date dinner at home

  • October 28, 2022

On this episode of In The Know Eats: Dinner Party, food influencer Skyler Bouchard Oppenheim (@diningwithskyler) welcomes us into her Philadelphia, Pennsylvania home as she prepares an “Italian-American-European fusion” menu for an intimate dinner double date with her friends and husband, Sebastian.

Skyler shares that she gets meal inspiration from going to the market, and this particular visit inspired her to put together a cheese-board/” data-ylk=”slk:cheese board” class=”link “cheese board, a “crudités-style” cold broccolini and asparagus salad, and balsamic ribeye steaks.

After prepping the salad ahead of time, Skyler gets to work on the cheese board. The food influencer explains that she likes to mix different textures of cheeses when it comes to assembling a board. This cheese board includes a Gouda cheese from Holland, a Pennsylvania cheese called Bamboozle that’s “kind of like a mozzarella, but softer,” a cubed hard cheese, and a creamy Vermont cheese that becomes the centerpiece of the board. Skyler fills out the board with cured meats, bread, crackers, and various fillers like cornichon pickles, and olives.

On to the main course: the ribeye steaks. Skyler removes the steaks from their balsamic marinade and sprinkles some salt and pepper on them before throwing them on the grill. Once cooked, she lets the steaks rest for about 10 minutes to allow the juices to “redistribute,” and then cuts them into slices and pours some of the jus on top.

As soon as the guests arrive, it’s time to pour the wine! Skyler is a level 3 sommelier, so she knows her stuff. She pairs their meal with a Sonoma Chardonnay from Russian River Valley, California, and a Washington State Cabernet Sauvignon. “It’s my favorite region for [Cabernet] in the U.S.,” admits Skyler.

With the summer coming to an end, thousands of people in the Richmond area spent Monday enjoying the outdoors and venues with friends and family for the Labor Day holiday.

“Today is park day,” said Erika Rivers as she, her husband, Keith, and 8-year-old daughter Keirra waited to enter the butterfly exhibit at Lewis Ginter Botanical Garden. “We started at Libby Hill Park, then went to lunch and, now, we’re here.”

Keith Rivers said the family chose to visit the garden Monday as it was offering free entry to visitors as part of the Genworth Free Community Day observance. He said they had visited before and were eager to see how things have changed in the butterfly exhibit since then.

“There’s a lot of flora,” he said as he took out his phone to show photos of flowers he had taken during their visit. “I don’t know what they are, but they’re pretty.”

Elsewhere at the garden, longtime friends Cathy Thompson and Victor Pone were also trying to identify a blue flower that seemed to resemble a daisy. They sought out someone on staff who could tell them.

Speaking to a news reporter instead, they talked about how they both hadn’t visited the botanical garden in many years, but thought it would make for a nice holiday outing and an opportunity to find inspiration for their respective gardens at home.

“I love the outdoors,” said Pone, who has a large garden and pond in his backyard with approximately 300
